Silverton is one of the highest towns in the United States, at 9,318 feet (2,836 m) above sea level. Once a frontier mining town teeming with saloons, Silverton is now a tamed-down version of the same two-street town.
Silverton’s main business section was built in the late 1800s. Unlike many other mining towns, Silverton never experienced a major fire, and most of the buildings are still standing. Silverton is a National Historic Landmark.
Features
During summer, the best way to get to historic Silverton, nestled in the San Juan Mountains, is either via a drive along the Million Dollar Highway, which got its name from the views, or by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
